About the festival

The 35mm Vis Film Festival is unique in its exclusive use of 35mm film reels for all screenings. Just as we once carefully developed our cameras after summer vacations, cherishing each captured photograph, filmmakers took great care with their film stock. Every frame had to be meticulously planned, and everything had to work perfectly. Today, at this boutique film festival, we showcase films carefully preserved in the archival cinémathèques of Belgrade, Zagreb, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, paying tribute to the art of filmmaking in this distinctive way.

35mm Vis Film Festival 2025

This year’s third edition of the festival is dedicated to the Croatian yet globally recognized director Rajko Grlić and the films that have defined his rich and diverse creative legacy.

Our program features a retrospective of his iconic works that have left a profound mark on Croatian and regional cinematography. These films, which have been screened at various prestigious venues, offer audiences the chance to rediscover masterpieces such as Bravo Maestro, Samo jednom se ljubi, U raljama života, Čaruga, and others.

Each evening of this year’s festival, we have prepared special surprises for director Rajko Grlić and all our guests, including appearances by actors from the iconic films featured in the festival program. Stay tuned to our Instagram profile for an upcoming giveaway contest.

Previous Festival Editions

In its inaugural year, 2023, the festival showcased films by legendary filmmakers grouped under the unique banner of the “Prague School.”

In 2024, the second edition celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Hrid Summer Cinema with a screening of Gone with the Wind, the film that premiered there six decades ago. The 35mm Vis Film Festival 2024 paid homage to director Miloš Forman and welcomed his wife, Martina Forman, and Hollywood star Woody Harrelson.

Our festival selectors, Rudolf Biermann, Mike Downey, and Dieter Kosslick, once again make the 35mm Vis Film Festival a magical small-scale event over five days, presenting seven films under the starry skies of Vis.

Experience the magic of watching films on 35mm film reels. Get your tickets today!
